![]() Here's the latest update from Wellington City Council on the work happening on The Parade this week: Shopping centre All the work in the shopping centre and 30km/h zone is now finished apart from some of the road markings. The section just south of the shops between Medway Street and the end of the 30km/h zone was sealed on Saturday 21 November. We had hoped to get this done the day before but the weather was too wet for this type of work. The road at the northern end of the shopping centre from the raised pedestrian crossing to just north of Avon Street was sealed on Sunday. We have remarked parking spaces and most line markings. The red surfacing at either end of the 30km/h, and areas of green, will be applied in about a months’ time once the new surface has cured (or oxidised). Avon Street The first of the new cycle by-passes has been completed at the bus stop near Avon Street. Work is also progressing on the other side, outside the church. The new kerbline and bike path are in. We’ve also completed the concrete pad for the new bus shelter. The shelter is expected to be installed at the end of November and in use early in December. Tamar Street We’re installing a new pedestrian crossing at this intersection. We excavated part of the road and footpath on the southern side of the intersection on both sides of the road last week and will put in the new kerbs for the pedestrian crossing this week. The bus stop has been temporarily moved south while the work is in progress. Early in December, the bus stop will be closed and moved to its new location by Avon Street. Mersey Street A new section of kerbline has been put in outside the Mersey Street dairy, part of improving the pedestrian crossing facilities and creating a cycle by-pass. The contractors will be pouring the new bike path in this location later in the week. Work is also continuing outside the Empire Cinema where we are in the process of relocating the bus stop about 20 metres north of its usual location, putting in a new pedestrian crossing point and installing a bike bypass. To make these changes, we have had to temporarily remove the bus shelter. The new kerbs were installed through here last week. We intend to pour the new concrete bike path this week. The bus shelter will be reinstalled next week in its new spot. We will also tidy up and reasphalt parts of the footpath and road edge. Thanks again to everybody in the community for your incredible patience while this work is going on and please continue to support the businesses who are affected. ![]() The weekend is nearly here so it's time for another friendly reminder to please support the local businesses who are affected by the Island Bay Parade Upgrade project. The good news is that the work in the main shopping centre is almost completely finished. Here's the latest update from the council about the work happening over the weekend: Due to the threat of poor weather today (Friday 20 November) paving was not undertaken on The Parade south of Medway Street. The weather is expected to improve tomorrow to allow the paving work to be completed. To finish the paving work at the north end of the shops by Avon Street we plan to carry on and complete this on Sunday. This will mean the work we had undertaken to complete in and around the shopping centre will be completed on schedule. It's worth noting that the work in the shopping centre is not directly related to the cycleway. Raising the pedestrian crossings, installing speed cushions and resealing the road is actually about reinforcing the 30 kph speed limit, which hasn't been very well observed (or policed) up until now. This will benefit cyclists (because the cycleway doesn't actually go through the shopping centre) but it will also make the area much calmer, nicer and safer for everyone else. In the long-term this will benefit the businesses who have had to endure some short-term disruption. ![]() The bad news is that as the work moves to the north and south of the shopping centre there are other businesses being affected. The most severely affected right now are the Empire Cinema and the Mersey Street Store at the intersection of The Parade and Mersey Street. Why not make a point of dropping into the dairy this weekend and making a purchase? And if you fancy seeing a movie then get along to the Empire. Here's what they have now showing. They also have a great eatery if you're hungry. Nobody likes road-works, even when the disruption is relatively short-term, but the extent to which local businesses are affected by this is totally down to us - their customers. If the Island Bay community (and anybody else reading this) are prepared to make just a little extra effort to go out of their way this weekend then there's absolutely no reason why these businesses should suffer. Forza Island Bay! ![]() Here's the latest update from Wellington City Council on the work happening along The Parade this week: Shopping centre The section of the shopping centre between the two raised pedestrian crossings is now complete. And – all going well – we expect to have the remaining work in the 30km/h zone finished by the end of this week. We did plan to reseal the section just south of the shops between Medway Street and the end of the 30km/h zone on Saturday 14 November. The chip seal went down, but we have had to postpone the asphalting as the sub-contractor lined up has been unable to provide the required mix. Weather permitting, this sealing work will now happen on Friday 20 November. Work will also be continuing this week at the northern end of the shopping centre from the raised pedestrian crossing to just north of Avon Street. This will include rotomilling the road surface on Thursday, laying gravel (or chips), and asphalting on Saturday 21 November. Rotomilling involves grinding and removing the top layer of the road in preparation for the new seal. The contractors will do what they can to minimise disruption, but this is noisy, dusty work. Avon Street The first of the new cycle by-passes has been completed at the bus stop near Avon Street. We’re now doing some final road modifications adjacent to the kerb in this area ahead of the sealing work this weekend. Work is also progressing on the other side, outside the church. The new kerbline and bike path are in. The concrete pad for the new bus shelter will be poured this week. The new shelter is expected to be installed at the end of November. Tamar Street We’re installing a new pedestrian crossing here and altering the bus stop to include a cycle by pass. Some preliminary work has already been done and work is about to ramp up. Behind the construction fences, we’ll be excavating part of the road and footpath on the southern side of the intersection on both sides of the road. The new kerbs are expected to be laid next week. Mersey Street A new section of kerbline was put in outside the Mersey Street diary last week, part of improving the pedestrian crossing facilities in this location and creating a cycle by-pass. This week, you’ll see the boxing going in for the new bike path. Further along the street, outside the Empire Cinema, we’ll be putting in the new kerb adjacent to the bus stop and ramps for the new pedestrian crossing. The new concrete bike path will be boxed this week and poured next week. Thanks again to everybody in the community for your incredible patience while this work is going on and please continue to support the businesses who are affected. This is expected to happen on Monday and Tuesday. We’ll also be working outside the medical centre and library this week. Weather permitting, we plan to reseal the section of road between Medway Street and the southern end of the 30km/h zone this Saturday 14 November. Between now and then, the contractors will be doing the necessary preparations. This will include some road repair work and then rotomilling on Thursday and Friday. Rotomilling involves grinding and removing the top layer of the road in preparation for the new seal. The contractors will be doing what they can to minimise disruption, but this is noisy, dusty work. Avon Street You can see the first of the new cycle by-passes taking shape at the bus stop near Avon Street. The concrete bike path is in, and weather permitting, the footpath on this side will be resealed this week. Work is also progressing on the other side, outside the church. The new kerbline and foundations for the new bus shelter are in. The contractors plan to pour the concrete bike path this week and may also complete the concrete pad that the new shelter will sit on. ![]() Tamar Street We’re installing a new pedestrian crossing here and altering the bus stop to include a cycle by-pass. Preliminary work happening this week will include saw-cutting on both sides of the road in preparation for kerbline changes. Mersey Street A new section of kerbline will be laid early this week as we develop a new pedestrian crossing point outside the Mersey Street diary. Just up from this, outside the Empire Cinema, we’ll be saw-cutting and digging up the road in preparation for kerbline changes adjacent to the bus stop.
