Update for the week 23-29 November

Here's the latest update from Wellington City Council on the work happening on The Parade this week:

Shopping centre

All the work in the shopping centre and 30km/h zone is now finished apart from some of the road markings.

The section just south of the shops between Medway Street and the end of the 30km/h zone was sealed on Saturday 21 November. We had hoped to get this done the day before but the weather was too wet for this type of work.

The road at the northern end of the shopping centre from the raised pedestrian crossing to just north of Avon Street was sealed on Sunday.

We have remarked parking spaces and most line markings. The red surfacing at either end of the 30km/h, and areas of green, will be applied in about a months’ time once the new surface has cured (or oxidised).

Avon Street

The first of the new cycle by-passes has been completed at the bus stop near Avon Street.

Work is also progressing on the other side, outside the church. The new kerbline and bike path are in. We’ve also completed the concrete pad for the new bus shelter. The shelter is expected to be installed at the end of November and in use early in December.

Tamar Street

We’re installing a new pedestrian crossing at this intersection.

We excavated part of the road and footpath on the southern side of the intersection on both sides of the road last week and will put in the new kerbs for the pedestrian crossing this week.

The bus stop has been temporarily moved south while the work is in progress. Early in December, the bus stop will be closed and moved to its new location by Avon Street.

 Mersey Street

A new section of kerbline has been put in outside the Mersey Street dairy, part of improving the pedestrian crossing facilities and creating a cycle by-pass. The contractors will be pouring the new bike path in this location later in the week.

Work is also continuing outside the Empire Cinema where we are in the process of relocating the bus stop about 20 metres north of its usual location, putting in a new pedestrian crossing point and installing a bike bypass. To make these changes, we have had to temporarily remove the bus shelter.

The new kerbs were installed through here last week. We intend to pour the new concrete bike path this week.

The bus shelter will be reinstalled next week in its new spot. We will also tidy up and reasphalt parts of the footpath and road edge.

Thanks again to everybody in the community for your incredible patience while this work is going on and please continue to support the businesses who are affected.

Hi there,

Will the new location of the bus stop at Mersey Street be close to the shelter of the shops? This is a VERY busy bus stop during peak times and the single shelter that was there is not big enough to accommodate everyone. Most people use the shops for shelter on Wellingtons frequently wet and windy days.

If it isn't, well the negatives of public transport will start to out way the benefits. It's not much cheaper than driving - my partner and I currently collectively spend about $14 on public transport every day and if the small amount of extra petrol we'll use means difference between getting to work dry (as apposed to wet using the bus), I chose the car.

Even when this bike lane is in, cycling is still not a safe or attractive option for me. Adelaide road is still the most scariest and dangerous section of the journey into the city, both as a cyclist and a motorist. So, as a resident of Island Bay, these changes are more annoying because they actually have no value to me - when you've finished, I still don't have a safe cycle route to work.

Regards,

Katrina

Hi Katrina,

Yes, the bus shelter at Mersey Street will be right in front of 212 The Parade so passengers will still be able to shelter in front of the Empire Cinema and Hairloom Hair Design.

In regard to the cycleway carrying on through Berhampore don't forget that Island Bay is just Stage 1 of a route all the way into the CBD and if it hadn't been delayed then work on Stage 2 through Berhampore probably would have started by now. It will happen, however, because it is part of the network planned as part of the council's Cycling Framework. This issue is discussed a bit more in this blog: https://cycwell.wordpress.com/2015/10/27/the-curious-incident-of-the-missing-cycle-route/

Also, the cycleway isn't just for commuters, it will make it much nicer and safer for local and recreational cyclists. One of the key aims of any cycleway is to get more people biking more often and sometimes that starts with simply making short trips from home to school, shops, parks etc.

Cheers
