There seems to be some mis-information going around the Island Bay community regarding the impact of the cycleway on street parking on The Parade.
Here's the facts: There are currently 267 legal, formalised parking spaces on The Parade. It is proposed to remove 28 spaces to make way for the cycleway, leaving 239. That's a reduction of 10%. Some new parking spaces will be created by adding more angle parking in Mersey Street, off-setting some of that reduction. In June 2014 Wellington City Council did a survey of demand for street parking along The Parade. They counted the number of street parks being used at 8 different points in time over a week. The average observed demand was 166 spaces (62% of supply). The maximum observed demand was 216 spaces (81% of supply). The minimum observed demand was 137 spaces (51% of supply). Note that the average and maximum observed demand are both well within the proposed supply of 239 spaces. The majority of businesses on The Parade will be unaffected by changes to street parking because there will be no changes in the main shopping village between Medway Street and Avon Street. In a future post we will attempt to identify the specific impact on every business along The Parade. None of the impacts are drastic but we'll make some suggestions for how the community can continue to support these businesses regardless. Please share this information with your friends and neighbours. There's no reason for anyone to be unduly worried about how the cycleway will impact on-street parking.
